I hated it when they started it and have hated it ever since. I remember when MS changed the way they did Office licensing being connected to a MS account.
I have no insight, but completely empathize with this dilemma.

Under that section, it will have each of our individual Microsoft License keys, however when you click on one, it will say something like Microsoft Portal Key = the Microsoft version of that key, when we add a product key to our account on Microsoft it seems like it encrypts the key and will show you the encrypted version or something. When we log in on Microsoft's website at /services and go to the "Services & Subscriptions" tab, it shows "Products you've purchased".

Product Key = the product key that is the real license key from the actual Retail product key cardģ.
Computer name = the actual computer name in our systems, not what shows on Microsoft if it's added to the Device tab, just pointing this out because we just not recently realized the "Devices" section was even thereĢ. We do have a spreadsheet, but we have these columns:ġ. I just verified that it does say Retail on all of the Product key cards. I'll be honest, I've never noticed the "Computer name" part before and I'm curious if that's something they've added in the last year or 2? If that's the identifier that we need to use when selecting the PC then we can definitely go that route, it just means that we would have to sign in to Microsoft for every PC under one of the 3 "personal" accounts that we are licensed under. PDQ could possibly help us track which PC gets which License.Ģ- This is the real issue, how do we effectively know which license to choose from when it comes to selecting from a list? They don't show the license key on the list, they just show "last used on", the year and version, and some also say "Computer Name" as I mentioned at the end of the main post. I guess we are having 2 issues at this point:ġ- manage the licenses, currently we are using Excel but it's basically useless at this point with how Microsoft is handling licensing. Is this the way that everyone else is managing the Licenses? After getting them all to show up under Devices under the right account, then you just select the one that had the old PC's name there? If this is the correct way to do it now, what are the cons of having our devices show up on those personal accounts and if there is a way for me to move them to the "work accounts"? I imagine that I would have to find a way to move the license to the work account as well.Įither way, I feel like we are in a bind and would appreciate any advice/insight. I just went and verified that when we login to Microsoft from Microsoft Office to select the account, it's now adding our PC's to the devices Tab on that Microsoft Personal account. We have noticed that some of our PC's are showing up under some of the Microsoft accounts under the "Devices" tab, and I'm pretty sure that if they show up under the "Devices" tab then when we go to select the license during installation it will also say "Computer name: xxxx" on the list to choose from. We are having problems figuring out which License that we need to select, it's so hard to tell which one is which and I feel like if we select the wrong one then it's going to go and invalidate the other License keys. The big issue is that it will not show any License key's or anything at all here, it just shows "Microsoft Home & business 2016 | Last USED on 08/08/18" or something similar to that. So we have to figure out which account that PC's license falls under, sign in, and then it will give you a list of Microsoft Licenses to choose from.

The issue we keep running into is that when we replace a computer and install Microsoft Office, it wants you to sign in and select a Product key. Our domain and business are now registered with Microsoft so we can setup/manage "work accounts" if we have to.

Perhaps these should be under the "Work account created by IT" but I have no idea how to switch them/transfer them to those accounts or even transfer them all to 1 account. These licenses are split between 3 different Microsoft accounts under "Personal account created by You", this was not my doing, I'm just the one that's left trying clean this up. Most of them have 2013, 2016, or 2019 Home & Business Licenses. As a preface, we are planning on making the switch to O365 later this year. I was going to see if anyone can give me any advice or insight as to what we are missing or how we might be able to approach this better.
We have been having a heck of a time trying to manage our Microsoft Office licenses for our business.
